The first coin-operated vending machines were introduced in London, England, in the early 1880s. They dispensed post cards. Around the same time Richard Carlisle, an English publisher and bookshop owner, invented a vending machine for selling books. In 1888, the Thomas Adams, owner of the Adams Gum Company introduced the very first vending machines to the United States. The machines were installed on the elevated subway platforms in New York City and sold Tutti-Fruiti gum. The round candy coated gumball and gumball vending machines were introduced in 1907.
Vending machines soon offered everything including; cigars, postcards, stamps, etc. In Philadelphia, a completely coin-operated restaurant called Horn & Hardart was opened in 1902 and stayed opened until 1962, sadly never rated in Zagat. Now the big boy, soda machines, were invented In the early 1920's. The first automatic vending machines dispensed soda in cups. Next came bottles, then cans, now back to bottles.
In 1926, an American inventor named William Rowe invented a cigarette-vending machine. Although over a hundred years earlier coin operated tobacco boxes were common in English taverns.
Vending has often been considered recession proof. Year after year this continues to be the case. When considering any vending business opportunity, consider the industry and your investment in it. The following is reproduced from www.vendingtimes.net Vol. 43, No. 9, September 2003, Posted On: 9/24/2003 "Industry Census Reveals Healthy Growth In All Bulk Vend Segments." By Henry Schlesinger
"According to figures reported in the Census, bulk vending made gains in virtually every category and market segment. Despite a somewhat sluggish economy and depressed retail sales, this is good news indeed. While the gains in the majority of categories were not dramatic, they were solid. And if the numbers are not reflective of a booming industry, they certainly reveal one that is certainly weathering an economic squall."
"Some industry experts see these figures as consistent with the trends toward increased price points, influx of so-called "premium merchandise" that broadens industry demographics and acceptance of bulk vending into an increasing number of locations. With demographics and locations now spread across a wider range of age groups and locations, industry observers say, bulk vending in this category continues to insulate itself from economic declines in any particular market segment."
These statements were about bulk vending, candy, capsule, stickers, superballs, etc. Candy is the number two vended item in the world, right behind beverages. This is a pretty strong endorsement of the potential in vending machine business opportunities.
Now lets consider what is a vending business opportunity. Have you ever been to a vending business opportunity seminar? There are vending machine business opportunities that have made people wealthy. Usually the host of the vending business opportunity seminar.
Even if you go in with both eyes wide open, do not believe that a stack of envelopes will get your vending machines locations. This is just an example of marketing that has been promoted at recent vending machine business opportunities. When you attend a vending business opportunity seminar do the following.
Leave your checkbook at home.
Compare costs of the vending machines.
Never get vending machine locations included in the package. Call vending machine locators and discuss your concerns. Find a vending locator that shares your concerns, and does not try to tell you what you want to hear. Your vending machine locator has to tell you the truth.
Analyze how much time you have to service your vending route. A stay at home parent may not have as much time as a seasonal employee or a retiree. This could be the difference between a bulk candy machine route or a snack and soda vending machine route.
Use the internet. The world wide web is for more than sports scores and recipes. Good vending companies have good web sites, with prices.
Now call Advance Placement Services, Inc. so we can help you realize vending machine business opportunities in your area.
